MK Fan Interview
It
was mentioned that you could literally beat your opponent up so much that
a fatality would not be necessary to finish him/her off. Now, will the visible
damage on an opponent contribute to if a fatality is performed a bit differently?
In other words, say a characters fatality involved a tearing off a
limb...if that limb is severely injured in the fight, will the limb be torn
off easily? Or will there be more blood involved...? Things like that.
Snakeye202@aol.com
Answer:
Finishing opponents are still based around doing fatalities. Visible damage
will happen to character’s faces. You’ll see multiple layers of damage with
stuff like blood, bruises, etc.
When
MK2 was released there was a sense of mysticism about it that I feel hasn't been
copied since in the world of fighting games. It seemed like that environment
was attempted to be copied in MK4, but it just didn’t work out. Even other
current fighting game franchises such as Dead or Alive and Tekken haven't been
able to do it. Sure they all have "cookie cutter" secrets with secret
characters and the like however the true element of mystery isn't there. In the
days of MK2 there was always a hoopla of questions surrounding if certain
characters were playable. Some even went into the system bios and became giddy
when names such as Tanya popped up on a records screen. Do you feel that this
element has finally been recreated in MK5, and why?
Jaguar
<knights@pacifer.com>
Answer:
We believe so. There’s going to be a lot of extra and interesting content,
along with a unique twist in the storyline. We even have a special character
hidden that his ties to an MK2 background, but that’s all I can say

What
new features will Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance brings to fighting
games that none of the other
currently available 3D fighters have?
Terrence
Williams <jamesw@wko.com>
Answer:
The multiple move sets, tight controls, cool use of weapons, and of course,
fatalities would be the short list.
How
is the Game Boy Advance version coming along?
What exactly is going to make it different than the past
Game Boy Advance fighting games? And will
it be released the same day as the console versions?
Seaserpent
<serpent3@hotmail.com>
Answer:
The game is coming along very well. Midway’s internal team that did Spy Hunter
(which is great, go out and buy it if you have a GBA) is working on it. It has
600+ frames of animation per character, which is a lot more than other fighting
games. The 3D scrolling of the arenas makes it look so much better than flat
constant ones. The game also has a betting feature that can be used while
playing two player head-to-head (link mode). There are 12 characters to choose
from, mini games, kombat koins, and of course, blood. It will come out a little
later in December sometime.
Will
there be a tag team option or even a two on two mode similar to MK4 in Deadly
Alliance?
Games4lynn
<dutchess30@attbi.com>
Answer:
We won’t have a tag team option, and decided against the two-on-two mode
because of all the compromises we’d have to make in terms of polygon count,
texture sizes, etc. by having four characters on screen at once. We wanted to
focus on the head-to-head fighting of two individuals, and not turn it into a
wrestling match….
Given
that there is now emphasis on Alignments of characters (Good, Evil, Neutral),
will we be seeing more of a 'realistic' fight ladder, i.e. Good will fight only
Neutral and Evil characters, but not other Good characters/Neutral would fights
all character of any alignment/Evil fight characters of all alignment? In the same vein, would sparing or finishing
certain characters have an effect on a character's ending(i.e. would Sub-Zero
not performing a finishing move on Female Sub-Zero have a direct impact on his
ending)?
Mike
Pappalardo <ekim1982@hotmail.com>
Answer:
There is more of an emphasis with the alignments, but we’re not taking it to
that level.
Fujin
seemed to be shaping up into a pretty important character (with his involvement
in Mythologies and MK4), but now he seems to be MIA. What happened to him, in
real life and perhaps in the Mortal Kombat mythos?
<Dralthi5@aol.com>
Answer:
Fujin is watching over Earthrealm while Raiden is in Outworld with the
other heroes.
Can
you give us any information regarding test your sight/might?
<DRUMMER070@aol.com>
Answer:
Test Your Might is coming along well, and looks great.
What's
been the most different/challenging thing you've come across while
developing MK:DA, compared to past Mortal Kombats?
The
Switcher <theswitcher@hotmail.com>
Answer:
Wow, there’s a lot of answers to that one. Probably the biggest two would be
the difficulty of developing on three, very different platforms simultaneously,
along with the sheer size & scope of the development.
When
doing early other versions of Mortal Kombat we only had to worry about a single
hardware platform. Granted there were a lot more limitations then, but it was a
single, fixed system. Developing for the next generation systems has been
extremely challenging with the platform hardware differences. We had to start
from the ground level, and build up one layer at a time getting each step to
work on each platform. This wasn’t easy. The technical hurdles and time spent
has been frustrating at times, but worth it in the end since the game looks
pretty much identical on each of the systems.
The
size is the other big difference. The first Mortal Kombat was just 4 or 5 of us
working as a small team. Our current expanded team we now have is well over 30
or 35 people. With so many people involved, it takes a lot more time keeping on
top of everything going on.
When
are we going to see renders, sketches, or screen shots of Reptile?
Evil
Devil <evildevil97@hotmail.com>
Answer:
Good question. We’re in the process of rounding some up, and will have to talk
with PR and the web folks about when to release something. BTW, Reptile has a
very cool fatality.
Why
is it that you have stopped referencing Edenia, and are once again referring to it
as the Outworld? What happened after the events of
MK4/MKGold that caused
this change. Is Shao Kahn back, since
it said something
about Shang Tsung regaining his favor on the official site?
Travis
Dill <go_tcd@yahoo.com>
Answer: Edenia was
freed from Outworld during the battle with Shinnok and once again exists as its
own realm. Outworld still exists,
however, and Shao Kahn is trying desperately to retain control of that realm. Kitana and her military forces have been
leading an offensive assault on Shao Kahn in an effort to prevent him from
repeating his past atrocities.
As for Shang Tsung regaining favor... He had
failed Shao Kahn when he could not secure Earthrealm for the emperor. As
punishment, he was beaten and imprisoned in the depths of Shao Kahn's
fortress. Periodically, The Emperor
would release Shang Tsung to complete tasks of varying importance. By faithfully completing these tasks, he
regained Shao Kahn's favor and was granted freedom to roam Outworld until he
was called upon. It was at this point that Quan Chi approached him with an
offer of allegiance.
I
was wondering if there are secret characters in MKDA what will they be. Will
they be old favorites, new characters, or a combination of both? Oh, and how
many hidden characters can we expect to see in MKDA?
Ninjaholic
<madesousa@hotmail.com>
Answer:
Yes, there will be secret characters, but if I told you then I guess they would
be secret anymore
/the5/emoticons/wink.gif> I can’t talk much about them, other than one has ties to
MK2, and another is totally new….
Who
is REALLY the Dragon King? Is he going to be in the game?
<_slim69_@excite.com>
Answer: The Dragon King was an ancient ruler of Outworld before Shao
Kahn's rise to power. He had formed the
greatest army that realm had ever known. An army so powerful that it had never
lost a battle. In an attempt to gain immortality and rule Outworld forever, The
Dragon King commanded his holy men to hatch the last known Great Dragon egg. Legends told that drinking the blood of a
newborn dragon would bring eternal life only if the dragon was slain moments
after hatching. Unfortunately, the Dragon King died prematurely. His holy men
loyally continued to incubate the egg with the intent of eventually reviving the
dead king with the dragon blood. His
army allowed themselves to be ritualistically slain and were buried in the
pyramid along with their sovereign to be resurrected as well some time in the
future. Generations of the Dragon
King's holy men have been incubating the egg in secret ever since. As the
prophecy has been told through the ages... "Upon the birth of the last
Great Dragon will the Dragon King return."
He
will be revealed in the game.

The characters in MK:DA ... do a different fatality depending the fighting
style in action?
DanelTsung
<memujica@cantv.net>
Answer:
Nope. The fighting styles are mean for all the action before a fatality.
The
weapon flares seen in the trailers and teasers aren't being received well by fans.
At this point, do you think it's possible...or even feasible to leave them out
completely (like in MK4) or at least make them all one clear color instead of
pretty pinks and purples?
SojaofCrst
<SojaofCrst@aol.com>
Answer:
I think most people will the happy when the weapon flares when they can see and
experience them firsthand. Screenshots can be deceiving since you don’t get a
feel or flow for how the work.
You
know how you guys said that your gonna make the game realistic with the clothe
tearing and stuff well I just wanted to know are you gonna make the stages
realistic too. Like for example the Ice Stage is, well, icy right so like would
you make the character sometimes slip and fall or something or for the Wu Shi
Academy would you make the ropes like wear away and then they finally break.
Jason
Virdee <jason_virdee@hotmail.com>
Answer:
A few of the levels will have environment elements that effect gameplay. Plus
there’s a character that will do “something” that causes an opponent to slip,
but I can’t get into that now.
Besides
Adema's rock song for the MK:DA theme, how will the in game music be? Gothic
like,(MK3-MK4),Kung Fu Movie like(MK1-MK2) or Technoish rockish like(Tekken)?
Voice
of Reason <BAJANCHRIST@aol.com>
Answer: Dan Forden is doing the music
again, and it’s coming along great. It definitely tends to
the gothic end of the spectrum: dark
and evil, though there is some techno/rock in the mix. There’s also a bit of
gamelan-ish music in certain parts which gives some of the game an Asian feel.
Will
you be able to do fatalities to the bosses? Will the bosses have their own
fatalities?
jojo00
<joey_00_98@yahoo.com>
Answer:
We are not sure at this point.
In
the final version of MKDA, will the weapons be shown to be pulled from a
sheath, for example: Scorpion's sword from his back, or will they be coming
from out of thin air?
Tim
A. <SimplyDisturbing@aol.com>
Answer:
Although not “realistic” the sword will appear. People might complain about
this, but if we did it the other way it would take too long to pull the sword out
and use it in a multi fighting style attack. We want to focus on the fighting,
and sometimes you need instant access to the weapons to do what you want.
Will
each character have multiple fatalities or just one? If there are multiple
fatalities... how many per character?
Mark
Petrie <mpetrie@utah.gov>
Answer:
We are still determining that. However,
we can say now that you’ll be shocked and entertained when you see them…trust
